THE average cost of car insurance is now €1067, but the gap between the cheapest and most expensive premiums can be as wide as 60 per cent. That's according to research from insurance expert Consumer Intelligence which shows that Irish drivers are still paying far more than our UK counterparts. PA:Press Association Drivers under 30 are still facing high rates for car insurance The high prices are being fuelled by selective insurance companies who are making it difficult for under 30s to get cover. There are up to 14 insurers across the market, with Aviva ranked as the most competitive across all age groups. Others who ranked highly include Post Insurance, Allianz, 123.ie, Chill.ie, FBD, SuperValu and AIG. However, the companies offering the best rates for under 30s are also the most choosy about the customers they'll accept. Crispin Rodwell - The Sun Dublin Aviva was ranked as the most competitive across all age groups In general, providers refuse to quote for up to 53pc of potential clients under 30, as they're unwilling to accept increased risk. However, the same companies are very eager to sign up older age groups. The study found that drivers under 30 can expect to pay an annual premium of €1648.70. The highest quote for this age group was €2185.09, and the lowest at €1030, with the difference of €1155.09 showing that it really pays to shop around. Those in the 30 to 39 bracket can expect to pay an average of €1027, although the quotes could be as high as €1329.44 or as low as €800.50. Drivers aged 40 to 49 fare slightly better, paying an average of €851.40, with quotes ranging from €1064.08 to €726.08. attack probe Top Irish boys school investigating classroom bullying incident shared online Breaking GARDA PROBE Chaos in Drogheda as shed and car set on fire and house is petrol bombed Breaking KILLER'S APPEAL Graham Dwyer wins legal action as part of bid to overturn conviction Exclusive Two sides of the tail Family of man wounded by armed garda say: 'There was no dog near him' utter shock Irish couple who buy scratchcard every week 'for the craic' scoop €200k WINTER iS HERE Met Eireann say 'severe gusts' to batter west coast with winds of 110kph And it’s the over 50s who are deemed to pose the lowest risk on the road, as the average premium stands at €807.40. Commenting on the findings, Consumer Intelligence Client Services director Neil Hart said: "Price competitiveness is thriving in a market in which customers largely get quotes and buy directly from insurance brands. "The clear issue for providers in the Irish market is that with the differences in pricing so marginal, the need for data and insight to inform pricing changes is acute
